In Boston, the #3 spot has long been occupied by a living legend, DH David Ortiz. With the newly acquired 1B Paul Goldschmidt and LF Justin Upton, it was fair to wonder whether Ortiz would continue as the team's third hitter. Would Ortiz remain in the spot he has occupied since the 2004 title campaign?
The headline gives the answer to this question away. Ortiz, as Manager/GM Ray Mangold stated in a press conference today, will hit fourth. This was mildly surprising but not shocking news. The shocking news is that it won't be Goldschmidt or Upton, either (who will be hitting second and fifth, respectively.) Rookie SS Xander Bogaerts will be the team's third hitter, and this is unconventional to say the least. Bogaerts is a highly regarded young player with the potential to be a major power hitter in the future, but scouts think that is years down the road. So the question remains: why is Bogaerts penciled into the #3 hole?
I guess only Mangold knows...
