In a not so surprising move, the Seattle Mariners shipped off new 2B Robinson Cano before he could improve on his .241 week 1 average. The Toronto Blue Jays came calling and brought the mother load of an offer and it was a smooth flurry of talks to get it to the final posting stage. Here is how it breaks down from the Pacific Northwests side of things. (Opinions are FULLY of those of SEA and are most likely not shared by any other GM)
SEA LOST:
2B R Cano - prototypical masher and can still play a good 2B SEA park is not HR conducive and that contract was something that made A-Roid look twice. We get rid of almost 200M off the books freeing up money for more coffee and umbrellas. He is a franchise player on a team that has a franchise KING. Fans will rebound when the kids SEA got com sup and contribute.
OF LoMo - meh..average OF who won't hit well in SEA. Tor is better suited for his bat. He left his glove at a school yard years ago so he had to be sent to another AL team. No huge loss
SP B Bevan - anybody remember when he was good? Me either...good control and..well..he has a heartbeat and fills a spot.
1B Ji Choi - a guy I didn't wanna give up. Good hitting 1B who can play C. Young and ready to hit the ML.
C - T Marlette - my #14 spec who would have been a career Eli Whiteside (read: back up to stud) made him mobile.
MR - S Kim - who?
SEA GOT:
SP M Stroman - could rise up to be a #2 or 3 SP or even turn out to be a monster closer. He was the prize of the lot and we're eager to see him los tossing with The King soon.
SS F Barretto - a perfect young SS to spray line drives all over Safeco while zipping around the base paths. Should be the SS of the future in SEA.
1B R Tellez - pure power hitting 1B. Will be pushed into action soon as Smoak has been sent off to ATL. Can see him launching bombs outta that shed for years.
SS Y Gudino - risky pick up on another speedy slap hitting SS. His age is a scare as he has a long way to develop, but the reward could out weight the risk..good glove that will get better
SP J Labourt - good control and stuff potential with a 4 pitch arsenal. make up of a quality set up or closer in the future
SP C Dejong - read above
SP's Bueherle & Romero - remember when Romero was an All-Star? seems many many moons ago. he's a bullpen filler most likely going to AAA..a just in case that dude gets hurt kind of guy. Bueherle can still throw, but will most likely end up in DFA land or be converted to a RF in the Dominican til he retires.
This was a big trade and has a bunch of risks, especially when sending a true and proven player away for kinds who "i think they'll be great..." The contract freeing move was obvious. More FA vets and the ability to keep the young nucleus intact for a decade are now within reach. Im not talking 100+ wins this year...but don't cast of these Mariners very long.
